  We were road tripping through Eureka with our five year old and wanted a posh room for the night. Hats off to the Carter House for accommodating us with such short notice. They gave us a room above their restaurant, kitty corner from the main house. The room was beautiful and they gave us lots of extra blankets to make a bed for our little guy on the floor near the fireplace. He loved it. We also enjoyed our bed which was very comfortable (although the TV hutch was in such an odd spot that we chose to watch a movie on our laptop rather than tweak our necks for two hours).
  
  The jetted tub, however, was in bad shape. The jets "shrieked" a high pitched wail when we tried to use them. And the room was above the kitchen where apparently they had some sort of work going on all night. The noise woke us up repeatedly, as did the noise from 3rd Avenue, which is apparently a thoroughfare through Eureka at all hours (we're talking big trucks, street cleaning trucks and lots of general car traffic).
  
  If I were to go back, I would try to get a room in the historic old house (on the corner) in the back of the house. The staff was pretty great. The breakfast was pretty good.

  Carter's 301 Restaurant advertises itself as a fine dining restaurant with a large wine selection. It does have a good wine selection, but the selection is very over priced. The food is good for a fine dining restaurant, but not exceptional. Compared to the other fine dining restaurants in Eureka both Cin Cin and Gabriell's provide equal or better food for lower prices. The pricing is very high, I would say excessively so for the product served. The service was average, even slow for this type establishment, but to some extent service should not be overwhelming in a well run fine dining restaurant. If the prices were not so high I would give this restaurant a higher rating. Priced as though its the Ritz Carlton in SF, its not.

  The Carter House Inns restaurant, 301, is phenomenal. It easily rivals any of the best restaurants in San Francisco or Portland (and when you consider that, its menu prices seem much more reasonable). In particular, Samantha is a gem, so gracious and knowledgeable about the menu and the wines (she's also a formally trained sommelier).
  
  The bartender executes superb cocktails and though we missed it, my understanding is that the bar also hosts an incredibly reasonable happy hour with $2.50 Manhattans and Martinis.
